Amalfi has to be lived in to be fully understood, frequenting the winding paths along the alley-ways, up the step steps that lead to the higher part of the town, between the pastel- coloured houses that seem to hang suspended but are set into the rocks.

Amalfi stands along the valley of the river Canneto (or Chiarito as it was once called) held between Mount Aureo on the East and Mount Tabor on the West. The town centre is shaped like an upside-down fan that measures 1,5km. in the narrowest part in the Valle dei Mulini ( about 2km. inland). In the past few decades an unofficial category of Tuscany wine has arisen, given the name Super Tuscan. Wines created by making unconventional blends of different grape varieties fall under the Super Tuscan category.

Tuscany Wine Zones
Tuscany is divided into several wine zones. Three of the most important of these are Bolgheri, Chianti Classico and Montalcino.

What is Bolgheri Tuscany Wine?
The Bolgheri zone, located in the west of Tuscany, is the birthplace of Sassacaia and Tignanello, which began the Super-Tuscan trend. In recent decades Bolgheri wine has received much attention for the quality of its wines. Winemakers in the Bolgheri zone specialize in red Tuscany wine created by blending the grapes of Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. Several different wines are produced using different combinations of these grapes.

What is Chianti Classico Tuscany Wine?
What more classic image of Tuscany wine is there than the straw basket covered bottle of Chianti resting on a checkered tablecloth in a cozy Italian restaurant? The Chianti Classico zone lies in central Tuscany. Red Sangiovese grapes are the primary ingredient of Chianti Classico, but they are generally blended with other grapes, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Canaiolo. Chianti Classico is a full-bodied, bold wine that makes a good complement to well-seasoned food. Chianti Classico wine has come a long way from its inexpensive, straw bottled past and today there are some excellent wines produced in the region. You can still get the straw basket variety if you choose, however.

What is Montalcino Tuscany Wine?
The Montalcino zone is located in the Siena area of Tuscany. Montalcino is known for producing the Brunello di Montalcino variety of Tuscany wine. Brunello di Montalcino is a red wine made from the Sangiovese grape and normally aged for at least four years, two in oak barrels. Brunello di Montalcino goes well with steak, roasts and flavorful cheeses.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a robust red wine that is also based on the Sangiovese grape and is similar to Brunello di Montalcino. Trebbiano is a traditional white Tuscany wine. Bianco di Pitigliano is produced in the southern Tuscan region of Pitigliano, and is a popular white Tuscany wine. Vernaccia di San Gimignano, made near Siena, is one of the best known Tuscany white wines.

Bolgheri is known for its “Viale dei Cipressi”, the Avenue with the wonderful historical cypresses praised in the famous Giesué Carducci’s poem “San Guido”. The poet lived here from 1938 to 1848. Arriving in Bolgheri tourists will find themselves in front of the castle with its red bricks which contrast suggestively with the green wood around it. The town which can be reached through an arched gate has kept its original aspect: the historical buildings, the old roads, the factories and shops create a fashinating atmosphere.

The History - This old medieval town is surrounded by a rich vegetation typical of the Mediterranean climate. It was completely destroyed in 1946. The origin of its name derives from Bolgheri, a famous local jurist and defender of human rights. In 900 a.C. The town was called “Sala del Duca di Allone”. Bolgheri was an ancient fief of the “Gherardesca” family; it didn’t change till 800 when important public works began. The castle was destroyed in 1496 by Maximilian I’s troops. The beautiful “San Giacomo and San Cristoforo” church, the hospital and the several craftshops were built in 700. The castle and its tower date back to 800.
The vegetation is very rich and varied: here you can find several different types of trees such as oaks, pines, junipers, cork-oaks and many others. Little rivers run through the green pinewood: the most famous are Fossa Cammilla river (its mouth is called Cioccaie) and Fossa di Bolgheri which bounds the town from Castagneto. Most of the wood is private so it is a rather inaccessible place. In the past Bolgheri was a very important port where goods came from everywhere.
